“Every woman who heals herself helps heal all the women who came before her,
and all those who come after her.” Wild Women Sisterhood
Part One: Barefoot Frontrunners offers the intimate experience of coming through the sexual and social revolution that allowed women to chose how they wanted to live their lives. Up close and personal, our choices and actions growing up didn’t seem to be a consequence of economic, social, and political forces, until we encountered a disruption and the chaos of 1964. Birth control pills and the sexual revolution allowed women to chose for themselves the trajectory of their lives, and exposed women’s capacity for sexual desire. In the chorus of the Anti-war, Civil Rights and Women’s movements, women responded directly or indirectly to the challenge of what it was to be a woman.
Part Two: Sex, Women, and Power describes how the sexual and political revolution exposed the social barriers to sexual liberation. The forces that restricted and limited consciousness were shaken in the conflicts in the nation, in the families, and as individuals. Breaking the threads of social order, new patterns of marriage and family organization followed, as well as the recognition of the legitimacy of the LGBTQ communities. The call for greater representation of women in leadership in elected office, education, and public policy is where we end Barefoot Frontrunners. Through the expressed voice and vision of women, we may find that future promise and that range of human potential.
